Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using these treatments must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
